By Emma Faid

Tom Webber has been building a reputation in the indie/alt scene over the past few years. A busker from the age of 15 Webber has a unique yet nostalgic sound, making them popular with fans across a plethora of genres. Webber’s influences are expressed both in their arrangements and vocal tone and style, with nods to a range of icons from Sam Cooke and The Beatles, to Richard Hawley and Paolo Nutini.

Webber’s latest single ‘Keep Calling’, co-written with producer James Dring and singer-songwriter Jack Kaye, is a masterful indie-pop song about the end of a friendship. Having worked with both Dring and Kaye on previous single ‘This Time’, the trio have once again delivered a rhythmic indie hit. The opening synths of the song immediately pull the listener in, giving the song that comforting ’80s feeling, as though it could be playing from a cassette player. The production of this song is remarkable, giving a full and vibrant sound, whilst maintaining the authentic nostalgia that permeates the track.

Lyrically, the song describes a friendship which has turned toxic, going from ‘having fun’ to tearing each other up ‘piece by piece’. The experience of growing up and growing out of relationships is one which most listeners can identify with. The repetitive and melodic chorus acts as a plea to the ex-friend, begging them to stop reaching out and to let the relationship go.

Whether it be romantic or platonic, this song will resonate with anyone who understands what it is like to try and move away from a relationship that no longer serves them; this is simply summed up in the second verse as Webber sings ‘Friends drift apart, it happens all the time’. Although a an emotive topic, the track remains catchy and fun, making Webber’s ‘Keep Calling’ a soon to be festival classic.
