NEW SINGLE RELEASE
SIIGHTS - Words

By Orion Joski-Jethi

Alt-pop duo SIIGHTS’ newest single ‘Words’ details the experience of many young people today searching for, experiencing, and finding new love. The song talks about the fears, anxieties and worries of being unable to find the words to say when you finally meet someone new, something that today’s generation, where app-dating, DM-culture, and social isolation are the norm, are subject to.

Multi-instrumentalists Mia Fitzgerald and Toni Etherson make up the SIIGHTS duo, and ‘Words’ displays their skills excellently, showcasing their beautifully breathy and soft vocals. Taking turns on the verses and singing with a prominent two-part harmony attracts listeners to the track, going far in conveying the emotion behind their anxious and worried lyrics. The simple yet singable melody is expressive, creating a likeability and replay-ability. The bass guitar further drives the song and puts in a lot of work to ground the conventional four chord structure, ensuring the tracks veers away from cheesy.

Yet, the whole track feels somewhat, one-note. The repetitive melody, structure, and instrumental lines, as well as the narrow spacing of the mix and a lack of dynamic range – due to the heavy compression of the production, combined with the song’s compact structure all create a flat feeling to the track, and leaves us begging for something a little more. There is space for this, perhaps flourishes of sound that would serve to elevate or accentuate different elements, or even something to occupy the higher ranges that might provide that “something extra” which is missing. This somewhat lets down the shining vocals and strong melody which could have been supported by a fuller arrangement, more intricate production, or a wider, more dynamic mix.

Despite an arrangement and mix that leaves a lot to be desired, the incredibly solid and breathy vocals of SIIGHTS duo, Mia Fitzgerald and Toni Etherson, carry the song and will drive the melody into your head. It creates a track that offers deep meaning and attachment for many who experience and resonate with its theme; fears and anxieties about new love and the (in)ability to express yourself.
