NEW SINGLE RELEASE
SAINT PHNX - Good Old Times

By Emma Faid

SAINT PHNX are an alternative-pop duo comprised of brothers Alan and Stevie Jukes from Glasgow, Scotland. They have been active since 2016 and have opened for many of the UK’s best loved artists such as Lewis Capaldi and Imagine Dragons, as well as being regulars themselves on the touring circuit. SAINT PHNX have accumulated a strong fanbase and have an impressive 300k+ monthly listeners via Spotify.

Their latest single, ‘Good Old Times’, is a poignant expression of missing days gone by. At the heart of the track, like many of their songs, is vulnerable lyrics, reflecting navigating the grief of losing their father. ‘Good Old Times’ captures wonderfully the feelings of nostalgia while maintaining the familiar SAINT PHNX electronic melody intwined with an emotive spirit that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.

The song opens with subdued whistling accompanied by synths, strategically giving the song an air of melancholy before we even hear the lyrics. The opening lines, ‘Wish I could turn back time, and go back to the start of all the good old days and fix my broken heart’ solidify these feeling of melancholy and encourages the listener to reflect on their own memories.

The rhythmic drumbeat creates a pulse like feeling to the song which contrasts and mixes well with the synths. This rhythm builds throughout the pre-chorus before the climactic beat drop which kick-starts the chorus, amplifying and giving punch to the line: ‘I’ve been searching for the good old times’.

The second verse continues the theme of melancholic reminiscing with ‘If I had a time machine, I’d do it all again.’ and ‘I wish I could pretend those days were here to stay’ solidifying the desperate longing for a past that you know you will never be able to return to.

The short song repeats structurally until reaching the bridge, when the music swells and gets bigger as SAINT PHXN sing, ‘For the good old times the ones we left behind, we never learn and now we’re searching for the good old times.’ The bridge draws to a close with a rhythmic drop that is far more subtle than the ones that preceded, which then fades into the final chorus and brings the track to a close. The transparent and bright soundscape of the song are the perfect accompaniment to the subtly emotive lyrics. ‘

Good Old Times’ is a wonderful expression of missing the people and places of your past. It allows the listener two and a half minutes of romanticising their memories and feel nothing but pure nostalgia during this perfect alt-pop single.
