NEW SINGLE RELEASE
nudista - Waiting Line

By Olivia Bloore

Nudista’s latest single gives us electric grunge textures, powered by an indie rock pulse.

An alt-folk duo from London, nudista consists of Robbie Carman and Pilar Matji Cabello. Their music draws on a range of genres from folk, americana and indie rock with their latest single, ‘Waiting Line’, a precursor to a new age of nudista, signalling their upcoming EP Nothing Makes Sense Until It Does. ‘Waiting Line’ embraces more of an indie rock sound, with the opening distorted strummed guitar riff emulating nostalgia for Circa Waves, Catfish and the Bottlemen and the defining festival rock anthems of the 2010s. It opens with the classic formula of an isolated electric guitar riff followed by upbeat fast tempo drums, determining from the outset this will be an indie rock banger.

The single stands out from the majority of nudista’s repertoire, having Cabello’s voice blend into the instrumental rather than floating over the mix. Although the lyrics aren’t always clear, the fast pacing of the melody signals an upbeat message. The lyrics in the chorus are more apparent, singing of letting go and the feeling of being free: ‘you’ve got no reason to hide’. Carman’s voice harmonises with Cabello’s in the chorus, seamlessly blending the two vocal tones into the full wash of grunge guitar textures.

The vocal effects create an eerie yet intimate feel; the prolific, yet short, delay on Cabello’s voice sounds as it’s been manipulated through a filter and evokes a crackly conversation over the phone with a close friend. This heightens the intimate nature of the track with the lyrics ‘I will stand and watch’ sound as if they are being spoken right into our ears.

The song builds to almost shoegaze textures through layered distortion, but the rhythmic strumming of electric guitar continues the strong sense of pulse throughout the track. The bridge anticipates a head-banging dance break, as the electric guitar chords instigate a gear- shift key change for the final chorus. This is the cherry on top for the feeling that ‘Waiting Line’ could be in the credits for a 2010s coming of age movie. ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’ or ‘Easy A’ spring to mind as obvious contenders….

The track encompasses a bedroom-rock-pop mood - the music video released alongside the track matches the DIY aesthetic perfectly. Filmed on a slightly grainy camera, with sketches and handwritten lyrics, nudista add to the intimate feel of the indie rock song.

‘Waiting Line’ is an uplifting indie anthem, which shifts nudista’s alternative folk sound up a gear into the realms of head-banging indie rock. We look forward to what Nothing Makes Sense Until It Does will bring.
