NEW SINGLE RELEASE
NewDad - White Ribbons

By Jonathan Dockney

Irish indie-rock band NewDad are set to captivate listeners with their latest single, ‘White Ribbons,’ the penultimate track on their most recent album, ‘Madra.’

Embedded in the indie-rock and shoegaze genre with subtle inflections of 90s grunge, ‘White Ribbons’ creates a Gothic ambiance. The single showcases the haunting vocals of NewDad lead singer, Julie Dawson, whose voice evokes a lovelorn ghoul in some dilapidated house lamenting their pain and regret.

The song is produced by Chris W Ryan, mixed by Alan Moulder, and recorded at Rockfield Studios.

Thematically, ‘White Ribbons’ is obscure, and it takes a little research to find out that it is about the challenges one puts their body through and how it always seems to bounce back (in your 20s that is). ‘White Ribbons,’ it would appear, refers to bandages:

“It's so pretty how you mend yourself

Never mind the hands you were dealt

Cause I know they never helped

White ribbons wrapped around me

Soft pink flesh that hugs me tightly

It's so pretty how you fix me every time”

The single is built on two chords, B minor and D Major, and provides a subtle backdrop for Dawson's silvery and melancholic melody, resembling a beautifully woven cobweb — delicate, intricate, and haunting.

Use of sparse and tonally similar chords mean that there is no sharp distinction between verse and chorus, resulting in just-perceptible change in shading, musically speaking. Dawson’s vocal delivery and the repetition of the lyrics provide the clearest indication that you’re listening to a chorus.

NewDad edges a little closer to an alt- and indie-rock sound with ‘White Ribbons’ and away from their previous dalliances with dream pop. As the band evolves, ‘White Ribbons’ illustrates NewDad confidently finding their feet within a fresh sonic landscape as they explore the intricacies of human experience.
