NEW EP RELEASE
maxime. - get it together !

By Annabel Marston

From their bedroom in Montreal, maxime. navigates different genres, creating indie pop music that is unique to the ear. Their new EP ‘get it together !’, consists of four songs that are energetic and experimental, ranging in their use of digital instruments, synthesizers, and even the modification of their own voice. Unpredictability is key in maxime.’s music, as each track brings the listener on an intriguing journey, and this new EP is certainly interesting in many ways.

The opening track ‘get it together !’ introduces the EP brilliantly, showcasing maxime.’s fantastic ability to produce music using only their music software and bedroom. The vocals in this song are very robotic sounding, with the hook of the song being almost a loop of incoherent words that sound glitchy – a fascinating and ambiguous way to begin this track. In addition to the energetic hook, maxime. uses gentle guitar melodies during the verses with electronic drums, which creates a contrast to the robotic voice. It is a fairly short song, the perfect opener for listeners to get a sense of what maxime. is all about.

maxime. even incorporates the sound of dogs barking in the second track ‘the life and death of a dog’. With the groovy bassline, this is one of the most creative tracks from the EP. It is fiery and passionate, with hints of that indie-sounding guitar in the verse, which is more mellow, before the barking and deep bass returns in the chorus. The question is, is maxime actually talking about dogs?

The next track feels nostalgic – a song about remembering teenage adventures. ‘apartment402’ shows off maxime.’s great voice, which is slightly muffled to suit their style. The electronic drums that play throughout keep the track very upbeat – perfectly capturing the reckless nature of being a teenager: stating throughout the track that ‘those were the best days of our lives’. This is the most personal song of the EP, one that is an easy, enjoyable, and definitely relatable.

The final track on the EP, ‘talk 2 me’, is again very heavy on the electronic drums; a catchy melody with the repeating line: ‘Call me when you need me, call me when you’re done’. This track is laid back and straightforward, with maxime.’s unpredictable nature revealing itself at the end when we encounter distorted heavy guitars, giving it a rock-feel. This is the perfect way to end the EP, leaving the listener on edge, yet ready to hear more of what maxime. has to offer. If you’re after fresh indie music, this EP is what you need.
