NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Lana Lubany - make it better

By Ethan Chetwynd

‘make it better’ by Lana Lubany is a powerful yet timid entry into the artist’s catalogue. It mixes a strong sense of melancholy with honest and vulnerable lyricism. It’s resonance and message is clear, transporting us to a place of introspection and fragile vulnerability.

We begin with a harrowingly sorrowful drone that quickly makes way for a stoic yet mournful guitar phrase. The chord selection here, whilst typical for this genre, utilises arpeggiation and the addition of some notes that add a sense of unease. The song develops from a closed and narrow selection to a wider picture accompanied with decorative splashes of arpeggiation that compliment the main vocal line, along with a stunning array of backing vocals.

The tonal shift in the pre-chorus serves well in driving the song forward. The prominence of the bass serves as a grounding force, making clear the level of melancholy we are experiencing, along with a slight growl that hints at a sense of anger, or apprehension. The use of a longer reverb tail also adds to the growing presence that the song is building towards, lifting us up before we are introduced to the main hook of the song.

Interestingly, Lubany rewards such a buildup with a return to the vulnerable vocal performance and muted instrumentation that was established in the beginning stages of the song. Whilst you may be expecting a larger breakout of drums and percussive elements, the return demonstrates just how fragile and emotional the song is intended to be. It’s a design choice that, whilst not as grand as what it could have been, serves to be an excellent artistic statement on the feeling of being vulnerable and weakened by your own struggles and own conflicts. This decision feels somewhat similar to standing up to a bully: you convince yourself of what you are going to say, only to falter before you deliver your words.

Lana Lubany’s ‘make it better’ certainly has the potential to make things better, if only by making you feel like you are not alone in your own struggles.
