NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Lucy Rose - The Racket

By Olivia Bloore

Lucy Rose’s new single ‘The Racket’ is a heartfelt anthem of resilience that showcases strength in a time of chaos.

Singer-songwriter Lucy Rose recently announced their fifth album, titled ‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’ which will be released on 19th April through Communion Records. Originating as a backing singer for Bombay Bicycle Club, Rose’s music is difficult to shoehorn into a specific genre. Her latest single establishes her as a unique artist whose complex sound draws on a wide range of musical influences.

The singer wrote in an Instagram post that ‘The Racket’ is the closing track to a deeply personal album which accounts pushing through ‘darkest times’ due to issues with her health. Rose described the song as ending the record on ‘a note of defiance’. ‘The Racket’ begins as a soulful, upbeat track, but becomes an expansive composition with a medley of different musical textures and production techniques.

The track opens with a cyclical piano riff of chromatically moving chords that never quite resolve. This chordal motif establishes itself as the foundation of the track, recurring throughout the song like a meditative reminder of strength and ‘defiance’. The complex upbeat drums shine through the mix, supported by an energetic soulful bass line. Rose’s vocals float above the busy texture in a relaxed yet confident way, singing ‘thank you for loving me’.

The production grows throughout the track, contrasting between standard live band textures, and the sudden intervention of orchestral instruments: horns, strings and even woodwind shine through the mix. The chorus hook ‘took it for granted/life ain’t always what you’re handed’ sings of how Rose had to ‘push’ through their difficult experiences. The most memorable part of the track is when the instrumental itself appears to dissolve into a ‘racket’ - be it a sophisticated one. A groovy bass solo over the shifting chords dissolves into a blend of melodies and textures, with distorted filtered vocals and interjections of twirling brass. Rose’s vocals appear fractured through a distorted filter, and the lyrics become inconceivable. However, the familiar rising and falling haunting chordal motif ends the track as a constant reminder of the ‘defiance’ and ‘love’ that runs throughout ‘the racket’ of life.

‘The Racket’ presents how love shines through the chaos of adversity. Positioned as the final track in the album, we look forward to what the rest of ‘This Ain’t The Way You Go Out’ will bring us.
