NEW SINGLE RELEASE
LOVA - Lilly

By Jonathan Dockney

Swedish singer-songwriter LOVA’s latest single, ‘Lilly,’ unfolds as a delicate tapestry and is the finale song on her EP ‘Hey mom, don't worry I'm fine,’ which was released on the 5th of January, 2024.

LOVA employs the power of simplicity on ‘Lilly’ (and for the other songs on the EP). The lyrics are straightforward and unordained. The melody, unpretentious. The two elements work together with LOVA’s crisp vocals to drive the power of the song.

The arrangement kneads in a gentle beat starting in the second verse and sprinkles smatterings of other instrumentation across the song.

This is a soulful confession and apology to a loved one. The magic of the song lies in the poignant refrain 'I'm so sorry.’LOVA’s regret and introspection (and perhaps guilt?) drip off the song as she apologises to a loved one, probably her mother, for not having fully grasped the magnitude of their sacrifice in raising LOVA. The subject of the song is never fully revealed, but strongly hinted at towards the end of the track in the lines ‘do you miss your life before you had me?’

‘Lilly’ is a song reminiscent of broody young singer-songwriters, like Billie Eilish, who delve into socially conscious subject matter.

LOVA's vocals are impeccable and soulful and carry the emotional weight of the song with finesse. Her delivery transforms a seemingly simple apology into a profound and charged moment of reflection on the ‘nitty gritty’ of life.

"Lilly" will resonate with a younger navel-gazing audience, coming to realise that their parents are only human and fallible,  and is a noteworthy addition to her discography.
