NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Lola Young - Wish You Were Dead

By Jake Goodland

Recent BRIT ‘rising star’ nominee and up and coming singer/songwriter Lola Young starts the New Year with an explosive but heartfelt single ‘Wish You Were Dead’, shifting from their R&B style into something more alt-pop.

Heavily dampened bass lines are intertwined with echoey guitar picks and a glossy soul driven drumbeat, building the track up and giving Young a platform to vent the topic of modern relationship toxicity. The strong vocal performance mirrors the instrumental perfectly, as Young symbolically manipulates their vocal range and tone to one that is more aggressive and heated. The instrumentation follows suit, building an atmosphere that reflects the message portrayed.

Simple but effective lyrics are exaggerated by Young’s powerful vocal delivery, effortlessly raising each chorus. The introduction of layers - such as the distant keyboard in the outro - presents an old rock/punk vibe, which we can only hope Young will experiment with in the future after this flawless portrayal.

As the popularity of alt-pop grows, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for artists to respond to the demand creatively. Yet, with Young’s natural sounding instrumentation and compelling vocals, they are sure to stand-out in the crowd.

‘Wish You Were Dead’ is another hit for Lola Young which elevates their sound, and is a track to look forward to in their upcoming shows this Spring.
