NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Lizzie Hill - Dirty Laundry

By Jonathan Dockney

Lizzie Hill's latest song, ‘Dirty Laundry,’ unfolds like a piece of origami art. Each element delicately folds into the other to craft a great pop song that will leave listeners wanting more…in more ways than you’d expect.

‘Dirty Laundry’ opens with ethereal synths that give it an atmospheric feel. Lizzie’s voice enters gracefully atop the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar; their voice reminiscent of Dido's airy allure but without the wistfulness. Synths and other electronic sounds are sprinkled throughout the song, which is just shy of 3 minutes long. Lizzie’s singing on the track is characterised by its conversational style and occasional rapid delivery, imparting an intimacy to the lyrics as they narrate a disillusionment with a failing relationship and friends who have given up on them.

The song plays with expectations — where one feels an impending chorus, a second verse swoops in instead. In fact, it’s not clear if there even is a ‘chorus’ in the song, with the final section being the only resemblance to one comprising of a catchy hook, layered vocals, and fuller instrumentation. Either way, it’s a pity this isn’t repeated as it’s a great moment for the track.

Bending expectations further, the title ‘Dirty Laundry’ isn’t mentioned in the song, which is clever yet leaves the listener feeling a little disappointed. Lizzie ends the song with the line “left me out to dry,” which evokes the image of dirty laundry - Smart! - but one can’t help but feel like the song is denied its oomf, with both the title and a definite chorus lacking. It’s a great, well-crafted pop song to be sure, but the listener can’t help though but wanting more!

The single is the second track from Lizzie and is produced by a regular collaborator, Ewan Dowling. Lizzie draws inspiration from artists like Holly Humberstone and The 1975. At only 17 years of age, Lizzie has performed live in session with BBC Introducing and has many exciting performances – including a line-up of festivals – planned for 2024.
