NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Lewis Fitzgerald - Unlovable

By Ethan Chetwynd

Lewis Fitzgerald is a south London based singer/songwriter with a unique personality and musical voice. His latest single ‘Unlovable’ is a positive representation of his writing style and his skills as a musician.

Fitzgerald’s bio is written with an unfiltered charm and charisma that has yet to be graced with the corporate mandates of many artists, it’s filled with an uplifting message and an honest reflection to the world. He is unashamedly himself and his optimism is infectious, qualities that are evident within ‘Unlovable’ as well as his wider catalogue.

Straightforward lyricism and optimism work their way into Fitzgerald’s new track which starts modestly with a calming resonance – the age-old formula of piano and vocals – with the track then gradually building into a more upbeat and joyous expression of melancholy. The lyrics present feelings of despair and sadness at the end of a relationship, yet the music continues as an underlying amnesty that speaks of hope upon the horizon with its more upbeat instrumentation and lively percussive elements, hinting that there is a brighter tomorrow. This creates a poetic debate between the lyrics and instrumentation, as if the protagonist doesn’t quite believe their own words. What begins as an unwavering vocal line, transforms into a more energetic and explorative character with a more emphatic and impactful tone which has been well executed, escalating this metaphorical argument even further.

The song has been well produced, giving the track a polished feel whilst maintaining an easy-listening balanced mix. This laid-back production quality furthers the notion of rejecting negativity from within, a message that Fitzgerald promotes - whether intentionally - during their latest release. Not often does a song built upon the foundations of melancholy and loss leave you happier than when you found it, but that’s just what ‘Unlovable’ achieves, imparting a sense of hope on the listener.

Whilst auto-tune may distract from the track’s otherwise authentic expression, the song is a confident offering from London based singer-songwriter.  Fitzgerald may feel ‘Unlovable’, but given the chance I feel many listeners would be willing to challenge that notion.
