NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Kingfishr - Shot in the Dark

By Lily Cresswell

Limerick-based Kingfishr have released new single ‘Shot in the Dark’, a Celtic infused ballad that will play pull on your heart strings.

Not too many songs open with a harmonica solo let alone one that is beautifully emotive, but ‘Shot in the Dark’ does just that. Preluding the lulling vocals, the harmonica offers a raspy contrast to Eddie Keogh’s deep, silken tones, and connotes this lone-man, cowboy character. Returning half-way through the track, the simple harmonica melody sings over the mix, and provides interesting texture above the banjo that plucks away in the background.

McGoo’s expert banjo playing gives ‘Shot in the Dark’ Kingfishr’s signature sound, moving the track along when needed, yet providing another level of depth. The crafting of different rhythms paired with McGoo’s relaxed playing style gives the banjo lyricality, acting as another vocal line. This is heightened by the subtle complexities of the Mcgoo’s dynamics, imbuing each note with raw emotion.

This emotion is reflected in the lyrics which plainly laments on the past and hints at heartbreak. There is a dark undertone to the song, with lyrics such as ‘…nothing else in the universe lasts all your life. Have you reasons to die?’ These pensive words are heightened by Keogh’s rasp that pushes through at times, creating swells throughout the track. The swells are beautifully exaggerated by soft vocal harmonies that glimmer underneath, providing even more warmth to the mix.

‘Shot in the Dark’ is a stunning indie-folk track, working to further establish Kingfishr as the ones to watch on the scene. Having already had huge success this year, including supporting George Ezra on their UK and Ireland tour, Kingfishr are ending the year on a high with the release of this gorgeous new single.
