NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Kingfishr - Leave

By Exandri Djumala

The ever-emotive Irish folk trio Kingfishr have released new single “Leave”, a gut-wrenching folk-rock ballad, detailing fleeting memories of family taken for granted.

Released after “Shot In The Dark”, “Leave” offers a more cinematic sound, utilizing a

syncopated percussive groove that drives the lyrically simplistic chorus forward. While simple, the chorus is far from shallow, portraying an earnest and vulnerable plea: “When you gonna leave?”, belted in Keogh’s signature powerful rasp.

The verses offer a wistful yet misty look into Keogh’s past. “Remembering the times

gone by/Pretending we were heroes in the lifeboats”, he croons, as a playful, harmonic fill dances in the background, mirroring the endearing image of a father and son. The fragmented and sparse stanzas reflect the ever-fading memories of family and childhood that come with growing up. Under these verses lays McGoo’s banjo, playing a spry, plucked riff that persists throughout the song and acts as the sole bridging element into the climax of the track.

The reverb-soaked climax features Keogh’s stunning reflection on the increasingly distant relationship most twenty-somethings experience with their family. “Living on a landmine, oh/Giving you the hardest time, oh” Keogh sings, over a meek bed of harmonized strings. Keogh's vocal performance here is especially poignant, his falsetto tone striking and as clear and accurate as his chest. With the last lines of the track, Keogh lets out his final plea: “I promise there’ll be time to save this/I'm still figuring it out”

With “Leave”, Kingfisher leans into their storytelling sensibilities, delivering a powerful single to their developing discography.
