NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Katie Pruitt - Worst Case Scenario

By Kayin Sowade

‘Worst Case Scenario’ is a fatalism busting indie-rock anthem by Nashville singer/songwriter, Katie Pruitt. Throughout the track, Pruitt showcases razor-sharp song-writing prowess, boldly challenging their own thought patterns with diaristic, almost confessional lyrics that showcase a breath-taking openness.

This ode to overthinking begins with electrical humming and ambient chatter – perhaps representing the discordant nature of intrusive thought. Following this, listeners are introduced to jangling guitars, soon met by bold and punchy percussion – it’s surprisingly upbeat, accompanied by distorted bass and scuzzy guitar lines.

Despite this, the instrumental belies a cutting introspection. Contrasting the aforementioned backdrop, Pruitt emerges; with a vocal quality that is both parts nostalgic and contemporary, painting a picture of someone at the end of their line, singing “Out on a ledge, and looking for exits”.

The first chorus is deliberately understated in its execution, subverting the typical movement towards catharsis, instead, opting to strip back to just guitar and piano. Over this, Pruitt asks, “What if I gave up control?” – a piercingly earnest question compellingly offers a bittersweet emotive quality and engages listeners by building anticipation for a more prominent later chorus.

Moving into the second verse, stormy flashes of crunchy, layered electric guitar punctuate the line “I am the king of disaster prevention” – crowning Pruitt in this moment with a flurry of sound. Pruitt exposes their behaviour with an unrelenting honesty; with no room for justification or self-judgement, “Cause if I expect the worst/I’m staying ahead of the curve”, giving listeners a powerful insight into their mental state – it truly feels as though nothing is held back.

The instrumental briefly relaxes following “And maybe then when it comes crashing down, I won’t get hurt” which serves to highlight Pruitt’s keen awareness of this attitude’s absurdity, before an overdriven riser propels the song into its louder, more assured final section, cementing their intention to move through these habits.

Finally, the arrangement shrinks away for the outro, removing heavier elements to allow space for Pruitt to impart a call to action; complete with beautiful harmonies underscoring the message “Once in a while maybe I should try manifesting something good/I think it’d do me good”.

Worst Case Scenario’ is track nine on Pruitt’s forthcoming record “Mantras” due on the 5th April 2024.
