Following their recent EP release earlier this year, Jxck has returned with another compelling EP titled ‘bathroom demos’ on Friday 7th June through TDP Music. This new EP is a short, 4 track long lyrical tether of longing and heartache, drawing inspiration from artists such as Alek Olsen and Sam Barber. True to its title, Jxck recorded the entire EP in their bathroom, capturing raw emotions and reflecting on life experiences.

The EP opens with the track ‘I’m drunk on the bathroom floor’, a personal stripped-back set up of vocals and acoustic guitar, with heavy reverb and double tracked vocals that enhance the drunken tone. The song explores the relatable blend of intoxication and romance, with the repeated lyrics “You asked me if I even want you, girl there's nothing I want more”, capturing a state of longing and emotional vulnerability while under the influence. The imploring delivery of the backing vocals heightens the feeling of inebriation and disorder, whilst the lead vocal remains softer and intimate.

Jxck’s second track ‘give me a minute’, evokes a sense of disorientation and vulnerability in every aspect, including the darker and sorrowful vocal delivery. The noisy lo-fi soundscape compliments the lyrical theme - with the busy static underscoring the repetitive line: “Give me a minute, gotta clear out my head’’, heightening a visual aspect of a dense grey rain cloud about to burst. The track’s pace conjures the feeling of moving in slow motion, held firmly by the heavy drum beat - as if you’re dragging your feet through the fog of his mind.

‘pacific coast highway’ offers a melodic lift in mood, starting strongly with the ukulele and electric guitar dynamically dominating the space. The atmospheric percussion and melodies compliment Jxck's emotive and sorrowful lyricism, reminiscing their past love and navigating the conflicting feelings that come with it.

Marking a strong end to the EP is Jxck’s most recent single ‘telephone’, featuring spookybands. This is the most energetic track of the EP, bringing essences of country music and a communal spirit, discussing the frustration of life’s problems and the reaching out in faith to cope. The colourful instrumentation, from the guitars to the percussion, also exudes an indie folk charm reminiscent of artists like Vance Joy and Noah Kahan, fused with a modern pop-rap vocal delivery.

With the latter half of the EP produced by BackYard, you can feel the energy shift within the EP, journeying from a more intimate, slow-core atmosphere to a more vivid soundscape. You can hear several genre fusions in this EP- Jxck is not one to be put in a box! With the speedy turnaround of this EP from the last, I’m sure we will be hearing a lot more from Jxck this year.
