NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Hannah Grae - Better Now You're Gone

By Olivia Bloore

A breakup song teeming with punk teenage angst: Hannah Grae unleashes their inner Avril with ‘Better Now You’re Gone’.

Hannah Grae’s latest single is a statement rock breakup anthem; drawing on early 2000s pop punk, Grae belts their sentiments about a past breakup with vigour. The single cover shows Grae tossing their hair in a rock head-banging style, wearing docs and tights - the signature look of the early 2010s tumblr punk revival. On the first listen to ‘Better Now You’re Gone’, we hear strong influences of Demi Lovato, Hayley Williams, and Avril Lavigne but also snippets of indie rock bands such as Catfish and the Bottlemen or Arctic Monkeys.

Overlapping distorted guitar riffs and a four on the floor drum beat drive the track from the outset. Whilst the texture thins in the verse to allow Grae’s punchy lyrics to shine through the mix, in the chorus we are met with a wash of sound, padded out with heavy drums accelerating the pace of the song. Every word is articulated: the verse starts high in Grae’s range as they sing ‘I don’t wanna write a love song’, which becomes the predominant lyrical hook.

Talking to Broadway World, the singer said the song “starts off convincing… but it becomes clearer that maybe that’s not the case at all”. ‘Better now you’re gone’ repeats with passion like an uncertain rumination, as if Grae is trying to convince themselves those words are true. Juxtaposed with ‘my heart is on the line’, we hear the heartbreak underlying the exasperated and fervent energy of the track. In the bridge we hear the true virtuosity of Grae’s range, as they belt even higher at the end of the second chorus as the drums go into half time.

‘Better Now You’re Gone’ is a strong precursor to Grae’s second mini album ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, which is to be released on 15th March.
