NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Goat Girl - ride around

By Matilda Stokes

South London's Goat Girl burst onto the post-punk scene with their self-titled debut album in 2018, amid the uncertain landscape of Brexit. The album received widespread acclaim for its tentative exploration of themes, setting a promising tone for the band's trajectory. They continued their journey with their second album, 'On All Fours', released in 2021, and now they've released their lead single 'ride around' from their upcoming third studio album, 'Below the Waste'.

The accompanying music video for 'ride around' takes a subdued approach, featuring lead singer Clottie Cream (Lottie Pendlebury) in front of the iconic East Dulwich estate, Dawson’s Heights. Pendlebury delivers their vocals with a quiet, dry, cool and collected demeanour, set against the grungy, detuned guitars that hum and whir above dominating drums that pulse mechanically. The track exudes a dreamy, ritualistic quality, perfectly encapsulating the band's desire to strip away societal norms and engage in genuine conversations, as lead singer Lottie details they ‘dreamt of conversations that stripped away all the etiquettes’.

Influences from experimental rock acts like Deerhoof and Philip Glass are evident throughout the song, with Deerhoof's exploratory strings and soft vocal delivery distinctly imprinting on the track. The lyrics of 'ride around'

offer a unique blend of optimism tinged with repulsion and despair, juxtaposed against an underlying sense of hopefulness. Lines such as 'Let’s be messy in the evenings' convey a relaxed yet introspective, reflective consideration.

The first glimpse into their third album, 'ride around' generates palpable anticipation for what lies ahead. With 15 more tracks yet to be revealed, Goat Girl's latest offering promises to be a compelling exploration of emotion and sound.
