NEW SINGLE RELEASE
Benson Boone - Beautiful Things

By Ethan Chetwynd

Powerful, Punchy and Passionate are three words that describe Benson Boone’s latest single ‘Beautiful Things’. Its poignancy developing into a wave of ecstasy that serves as a light shining through the cloud of melancholy that Boone establishes from the onset.

‘Beautiful Things’ begins with a vulnerable electric guitar line that bends and wavers with lethargy before subsiding to a more traditional band setup, increasing the intensity and pacing with the prominent rhythm section. The stand-out aspect of the arrangement is Benson’s own voice which is controlled with a virtuosity that is evident from the more vulnerable opening section to the powerful choruses.

Benson drives the emotion from the song through the song writing, with delicate yet straightforward lyricism and powerful performance as opposed to relying on the harmony to develop these aspects. The chord progression - a colourful adaptation of a standard pop progression - is never at the forefront of the songs character, as is often the case in traditional pop music, yet another testament to the capability of Boone to deliver a progressive track.

The reoccurring theme the song presents Is one of desperation and hopelessness. Boone speaks on the fragility of relationships and success, but also of an unwillingness to accept the inevitable loss of their ‘beautiful things’, something which is resonant to many of us with cherished loved ones and important possessions. It speaks of an anxiety and fear that many of us hold, of love, loss, and of our own vulnerabilities. Ultimately, it’s a reminder of our humanity and the importance of celebrating what we have whilst we still have it.

‘Beautiful Things’ is refreshing, impactful and it resonates emotionally. The track is a positive addition to Boone’s discography and a shining example of their vocal virtuosity and mastery of simple yet effective lyricism. Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ is certainly something that is beautiful.
